Healing our Waters Coalition invites US presidential campaigns to outline Great Lakes platform

The 12th Annual Great Lakes Restoration Conference is scheduled for September 20-22 at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. The Healing our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition (HOW), which hosts the conference, has invited representatives of the US presidential campaigns to attend the conference and provide a keynote address that outlines their platform strategies for protecting and restoring the Great Lakes.

Earlier this year CGLI joined HOW, Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition, Great Lakes Commission, and Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative in urging White House contenders to support a Great Lakes platform to protect the region’s drinking water, health, economy, and quality of life by funding the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, supporting improvements to national water infrastructure, and committing to combat harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. The last two presidents – former President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama – made Great Lakes restoration a national priority in their administrations. Over the last seven years the US federal government has invested over $2 billion in more than 2,900 local restoration projects that are addressing environmental challenges in the eight Great Lakes states.

The Great Lakes Restoration Conference provides an opportunity for Great Lakes advocacy organizations to highlight their Great Lakes restoration projects and exchange strategies for engaging the public in Great Lakes issues. Registration information and a draft agenda for the conference are available here.
