About CGLI

CGLI is a membership organization of large Canadian and U.S. companies and associations committed to sustainable development in the Great Lakes region. For more than 20 years, CGLI has worked to ensure that industry is a substantive partner in the development of the Great Lakes regional public policy.

CGLI was formed in 1991 by a group of U.S. and Canadian companies with significant investment in the Great Lakes region, under the leadership of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. CGLI’s original charge was to address the need for a business perspective on sustainable development policies in the region. Before CGLI, regional policy development discussions included government and environmental non-governmental organizations without organized industry representation. Today, CGLI is a respected partner in multi-stakeholder efforts to address Great Lakes issues.

CGLI offers an opportunity for Great Lakes industry to develop a coordinated voice in the bi-national Great Lakes basin. Over the years, CGLI has created an opportunity for Great Lakes industries to:

  • contribute to the virtual elimination of persistent, bioaccumulative toxic substances in the Great Lakes through participation in the bi-national Virtual Elimination Task Force and the successful Great Lakes Binational Toxics Strategy;
  • participate in the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Strategy and help to organize the multi-stakeholder economic  analysis that led to major U.S. federal investment in Great Lakes restoration;
  • constructively influence  the review and outcome of the 2012 revisions to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement; and
  • re-direct water use policy from “locking up the resource in the name of protecting it” to “sustainable use and re-use,” which led to the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Water Resources Compact and Agreement.

CGLI continues to be involved in regional multi-stakeholder initiatives. In early 2013, CGLI’s President, Kathryn A. Buckner, was appointed by USEPA to the 18-member Great Lakes Advisory Board, which will provide advice and recommendations to the USEPA Administrator on matters related to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and the implementation of the revised Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. In September 2013, CGLI’s Technical and Projects Director, Dale K. Phenicie, was named to the extended subcommittee for Annex 3 (Chemicals of Mutual Concern) of the revised Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. CGLI also:

  • serves as an official observer to the Great Lakes Executive Committee and the Great Lakes Commission;
  • is on the Advisory Board for the University of Michigan’s Water Center and the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise;
  • participates on the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Observing System; and
  • provides an industry perspective on numerous projects and studies focused on Great Lakes issues.

Each year, CGLI joins with other Great Lakes groups (the Great Lakes Commission, the Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition, the Healing Our Waters Coalition, and the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative) to present agreed upon legislative priorities at Great Lakes Day in Washington, D.C.
