Chemicals Management

CGLI’s Chemical Management Work Group focuses on issues that impact the use and management of chemical substances in the Great Lakes region. Issues addressed by this work group include chemicals of emerging concern, the increasing focus on “green chemistry,” chemical product stewardship, and other trends in Great Lakes chemical use and management.

The Chemical Management Work Group engages in the policy arena and directly in research projects and studies to introduce risk-based concepts and insert an industry perspective into regional chemical management initiatives. The group also works to provide an opportunity for industry representatives to interface directly with key proponents of these initiatives and efforts.

The work group’s agenda includes a wide variety of projects and initiatives that support these efforts. The specific agenda is established by work group members, but may include such activities as:

  • participating in a bi-national subcommittee responsible for crafting sound, science-based policy responses to emerging chemical concerns;
  • serving as an industry advisor for studies that attempt to measure, model, or inventory the presence and/or impact of chemicals in the environment;
  • evaluating and assessing evolving chemical product stewardship programs and tools that purport to evaluate chemical hazards;
  • engaging with stakeholders that seek to promote a consensus or understanding on green chemistry and the move toward “safer” chemicals; and
  • serving as a forum for industry representatives to exchange information about policies and practices that affect chemical use and management.
