NOTICE: CGLI Suspended Operations effective December 31, 2018

CGLI’s Board of Directors has announced that it will suspend operations beginning January 1, 2019 to re-evaluate its mission, strategy, and structure.

For more than 27 years, CGLI has worked with regional stakeholders on behalf of industry to advance policy initiatives that are ecologically sustainable, promote economic progress, and utilize the water-enriched assets of the region to support global competitiveness.

  • In the early 1990s, CGLI brought Great Lakes industry into important conversations regarding toxics in the Great Lakes and pioneered the development of a Total Quality Environmental Management program.
  • In the mid- and late 1990s, CGLI guided the development of the Great Lakes Binational Toxics Strategy (GLBTS) and orchestrated the participation of more than 200 industrial representatives in the GLBTS and Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Strategy.
  • More recently, CGLI has represented industry in the development of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Water Resources Compact and Agreement and has contributed to significant amendments to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

CGLI has been a thought leader in industrial water stewardship, contributing significantly to the development of the Alliance for Water Stewardship’s International Water Stewardship Standard; in Great Lakes Blue Accounting; and in a wide variety of other multi-stakeholder programs, projects, and initiatives. CGLI has been an official observer to the Great Lakes Executive Committee and the Great Lakes Commission and was an inaugural member of the Great Lakes Advisory Board. In 2018, CGLI partnered with the Great Lakes Commission and other organizations to quantify the significant economic impacts of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

CGLI’s collaborative approach – with other stakeholders – has contributed to more balanced regional policy, stronger and more representative governance systems, and an improved Great Lakes ecosystem. Governments and stakeholders increasingly view Great Lakes industry as a partner in the regional resource management agenda and now appropriately seek to engage companies directly rather than rely on CGLI as the collective “voice of industry” in binational Great Lakes policy development.

Kuper, who was CGLI’s President from 1994 to 2012 and currently serves as Chairman of CGLI’s Board. “CGLI was created to provide a forum for collective industry action on important Great Lakes issues and has succeeded in creating a ‘seat at the table’ in Great Lakes policy discussions for Great Lakes industry. Taking a pause now enables CGLI to reevaluate the organization’s mission, strategy, and structure, in the context of the significant progress that has been made.”
